Having lived in Tel Aviv's suburbs the past 3 years, I can assure you it's about as safe as going to New York City, LA, Rome, any other western metropolitan area. There are occasional flare ups, but seeing as the most recent one just happened, it's probably safe to say another won't happen for years. Enjoy the food, culture, history, and nightlife.
First, Tel Aviv (as whole Israel) is very friendly, you will have a great time just meeting the people, I don't think there is any chance you will have a "bad experience" as you had in Marseille. As far as I am aware if you are just in transit anf do not plan on passing through immigration (stay in the airport through out) you will not be asked for a visa.
